Ernst Luis Leviny (1818-1905)
Ernest Leviny (1818-1905) trained as a silversmith and jeweller in Budapest, Hungary. In 1843 he lived in Paris developing his craft before moving to London where he set up a manufacturing jewellers and goldsmiths company with a Russian jeweller. In 1852 reports of the goldrushes in Australia were circulating in London, and though the business was successful, Ernest left for the goldfields anticipating to stay in the colonies for a period of three years.

He arrived in Melbourne in 1853, travelling directly to the Castlemaine goldfields to try his luck, but the machinery he had brought with him was unsuitable. By 1854, he had established a jewellery and watchmaking business in Market Square Castlemaine and commenced investing in property and mining. He married his first wife Mary Issacs in 1858. She gave birth to a son Charles Ernest in 1859 but the baby died aged six months with Mary dying soon after in April 1860.

Ernest was a highly skilled silversmith and jeweller and his reputation rests on two known major works: the Colonial Gold and Redgum Inkstand (c.1855) which was exhibited the 1862 London International Exhibition and the Silver Standing Cup Centrepiece (c.1859), now in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria.

In 1864 Ernest Leviny married the 20 year-old Bertha Hudson, and together they had ten children. Ernest was a prominent Castlemaine citizen and at the time of his death in 1905, he was believed to be the wealthiest man in the town. He left his family well provided for, thus allowing his five unmarried daughters the freedom to choose their lifestyles and follow their artistic persuasions at a time when women were being given more opportunities to study art and take up careers. They worked across a range of media including painting, woodcarving, metalwork, needlework and photography.

In 1863, Ernest Leviny bought the 1 acre property Delhi Villa, which would later be renamed Buda after the Hungarian capital, Budapest.

Buda historic house and garden contains a rich legacy of the creative spirit of the Leviny Family, who lived there for over 118 years. It was largely due to the foresight of last surviving sister, Hilda, that Buda was preserved as a house and garden museum when she sold the property to the Castlemaine Art Gallery in 1970. Her sisters, Mary and Kate, left a broader civic legacy through their involvement in establishing the Castlemaine Art Gallery in 1913, and assisting with the development of the gallery’s fine collection of prints in the late 1920s.

a. - 1860 BURKE & WILLS on LOVEBAND'S TRACK: "-Mr. Burke and his party have crossed the Murrumbidgee at Balranald, and started for the Darling River on what is generally called Loveband's track. The sight of the camels terribly frightened all the bush horses, and many persons who unexpectedly met these animals were either thrown or had their horses run away with them. -The Murrumbidgee is now again exceedingly high, and large districts of the country is under water. The creeks in various directions are exceedingly deep and almost impassable. The Lachlan still continues to overflow its banks, and the whole of the adjacent country is flooded.-" - Page 502 COLONIAL NEWS. Note: Loveband's track went from about Pooncarrie on the Darling and skirted through the Lake Mungo sand and salt flats and went around Arumpa trhough what is now Turlee Station range land and down across the dry Pittapunga and Tin Tin Lakes to get to Balranald. Most of the track has been lost in the sand and the dusty blindness of history. The lower end of Loveband's Stock Route has since been renamed the Burke and Wills Track.

3. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) Monday 12 January 1874 - CHEQUE-DRAWER IN TROUBLE - (FROM THE BENDIGO ADVERTISER, JAN. 10.) - A well dressed, middle aged Yankee looking individual named John Loveband was placed in the dock yesterday, at thw Police Court, charged with obtaining money and goods under false pretences, by means of valueless cheques, and he appears to have gone into the cheque manufacturing line somewhat extensively. As is usually the case with fast gentlemen of his description he put up at the best hotel in the city, the Shamrock, of course, introducing himself to 'Billy' with a desire to renew an acquaintance of 10 years ago. Mr Heffernan however, failed to recognise 'the old friend' but as he was plausible, and ate and drank the best, and had two sons staying with him in the hotel, - defendant said they were his sons -no suspicions were entertained. After feasting for a week and seeing "the lions of the town" he prepared for his departure. His bill for hotel expenses amounted to £9 4s including the keep of a hors.e In an offhand way he drew out a cheque for £10, handed it to Mr Potter, the clerk, and received 16s change. Having settled this little matter and also having given a cheque for £2, and one for £1 for drinks at the bar, defendant made a call on Mr Ebsworth hatter, and purchased a fashionable "tile," no doubt feeling that was the crowning piece of a man who had to make his way in the world. He had a pleasant conversation with Mr Ebsworth, representing himself as a detective officer on a desperate case. On the unsuspecting hatter asking what case, the reply was with a nod, which was as good as a wink, 'We never talk." He intended to write out a cheque for £2 but taking a special survey of his victim he asked with a bland smile if he might make it £3. To this no objection was offered, and the change was duly given. Having succeeded so far well a drink was deemed necessary, and he proceeded to Mr C Crawford's Bath Hotel imbibed, and paid with a cheque for £2. This wound up the week, and next day being Sunday, he recollected that a shirt, socks and silk handkerchief were needed to complete his outfit, but being a stranger, he knew nobody who would 'take a stranger in.' A lucky thought appears to have struck him. At the dining table of the Shamrock Hotel he had made acquaintances every day -why not use them. The thought and action were almost simultaneous. He sought out Mr L W Lewis, tobacconist, told him his troubles, that he knew nobody, that he had worn out his nether garments buck-jumping, and would he oblige by taking him to a friend, who would supply his wants. Mr Lewis with his usual courtesy could not refuse a man who had sat at a public dining table with him three times, and remarked that the weather was hot, and proceeded with him to Mr Richard Vickers, hosier and glover. The door was not shut, but on the chain and in answ4r to a knock and inquiry, Mr Vickers said ho did not sell goods on Sunday. Defendant made an appealing look to Mr Lewis, and Mr Lewis said he would take it as a personal favour if Mr Vickers would break his excellent rule only for once to oblige his friend, as he wanted a clean shirt badly. Unable to resist the call of friendship, even under fear of the law for Sunday trading, the door was opened, and the goods sold. A cheque on a Melbourne bank was drawn out for £12s, the amount being £1. 1s. 6d., but 6d was allowed for exchange. All the foregoing cheques were dishonoured, together with one given to Mr Knight for a saddle and bridle, and the result was that defendant was pounced upon by Detective Alexander. This case, however, was withdrawn, as Mr Knight was too ill to appear. On the other charges defendant, who made no defence, was committed to take his trial at the Circuit Court.

4. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. 1848 - 1956) Wednesday 25 February 1874 - The Sandhurst Circuit Court, our correspondent informs us, was opened yesterday before his Honour Mr, Justice Barry and Juries of Twelve.
