- ANGELL ELLIS OBITUARY -ADB
Ellis, Angel (1831–1916)

The announcement of the death of Mr. Angell Ellis, which occurred at East Malvern on Thursday, was received with deep regret. He was one of Melbourne's oldest citizens, and perhaps one of the oldest Australian natives. His parents came out to Sydney in the Sussex in 1828, and Mr. Ellis was born there in 1831. He came to Melbourne in 1840, the voyage from Sydney taking 14 days. He could remember being lost between Newtown (now Collingwood) and Melbourne. Having become an officer of the Melbourne Gas Company, he continued in the service of the Metropolitan Gas Company when the then existing gas companies were amalgamated. He retired after 43 years service some 20 years ago. Mr. Ellis was very well known in Masonic circles, having been for many years Provincial Grand Secretary. He was also treasurer of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows for upwards of 50 years. He leaves a widow and a family of nine children. The only son living in Melbourne is Mr. E. S. Ellis, of Fox, Ellis, and Co.
